Mahishmati (IAST: Māhiṣmatī) was an ancient kingdom in present-day central India. It is located in present-day Maheshwar in Madhya Pradesh, on the banks of Narmada River.
It is mentioned in several ancient texts, and is said to have been ruled by the legendary Yadava Haihaya ruler Kartavirya Arjuna. Mahishmati was the most important city in the southern part of the Avanti kingdom, and later served as the capital of the Anupa Kingdom.

The great queen Rajmata Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar of the Maratha Malwa empire moved the capital of her kingdom from Indore to Maheshwar and also revived the art of Handloom Weaving by calling in expert karigars. Since then the Handlooms of Maheshwar haven't stopped and have created a legacy of beautiful handloom silk and cotton sarees which are well-renowned and famous all over the world amongst Saree connoisseurs and enthusiasts!
We derive our name and inspiration from this ancient kingdom of Maahishmati and the legacy of Rajamta Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar.
It's our humble attempt to preserve this centuries old tradition of handloom weaving and support the karigars and their exquisite craftsmanship.
